Client:  I never know what will happen when my mom drinks.

Therapist: What’s the worst part?

Client: She gets angry and says such hurtful things. When she sobers up, she apologizes and promises never to do it again.

Therapists:  It's not wise to listen to your mom when she's drunk, and you might consider carefully what she says even when she's sober.

Parents who struggle with alcohol abuse often overlook the impact their drinking has on their children. However, children who grow up with an alcoholic parent can experience a lot of uncertainty and stress. They never know what to expect from day to day.

Growing up in such an inconsistent environment can lead to trust issues for these children. Unfortunately, if trust issues are not addressed in childhood, they can carry over into adulthood and affect a person’s ability to form intimate relationships.

Remember, kids, go through stuff too.

Always be kind!
